Gianni Giuliano is of Italian descent, and born in Montreal, Canada where he continues to live and work. In 1998 he completed a Bachelor studies with distinction in Fine Arts from Concordia University in Painting & Drawing and in 2014 a Master degree in Art from Université du Québec à Montréal in Painting. He is the winner of the 6th Edition of The Brush Off Competition and twice a finalist (2016 and 2018) for the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Competition. In addition, he is also two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields grant amongst many other prizes. His works can be found in numerous public, private and corporate collections.

Influenced by the Baroque painters, the London School and their contemporaries Mark Tansey, Michael Borremans and Neo Rausch, Gianni Giuliano is part of the contemporary realist painters.

His work is not strictly academic, however the realistic treatment of the image is one of the main modalities of creation. He does not work from preparatory sketches. He composes on the spot an arrangement of characters and eclectic elements by setting himself as a rule to oppose to the iconographic incongruities in a trompe oeil treatment that will situate the characters in a visually coherent environment.

Substituting the strangeness of the plot represented, the realism of treatment is not exhausted in an agreed genre – portrait, landscape, genre scene, still life, narrative image, dreamlike, paradoxical or surrealistic. He creates another scene for the image, where the gaze is constantly propelled by an uncertainty to be solved, by a tension to bear, by the desire not to be removed from it. The image is neither an apparent reflection of a plausible reality nor an evocation of an imaginary reality, it lies somewhere in between that defies straightforward interpretation. His charged pictures address universal themes that seem to resonate with a specifically contemporary relevance.
