Gianni Giuliano is an artist of Italian descent based in Montreal, Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University and a Master of Arts in Painting from the Université du Québec à Montréal. His practice has been recognized through numerous awards, including first prize at the 6th edition of The Brush Off competition, and finalist positions in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series in 2016 and 2018. Giuliano is a two-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant. His work is represented in public, private, and corporate collections internationally.
Influenced by the rich history of figurative painting, including their contemporaries Mark Tansey and Alex Colville, Gianni Giuliano is part of the contemporary realist painters.
Gianni Giuliano’s practice engages with the abject and the uncontainable dimensions of human psychology. Through intricately rendered figurative forms, the artist investigates ambiguous and transitional states of consciousness, where the familiar gives way to the unknown. His work interrogates concealed aspects of identity by extending the logic of visibility toward what resists representation. By animating improbable beings and situations with an uncanny sense of humanity, Giuliano constructs visual narratives in which coexistence follows its own internal probabilities. Within these imagined frameworks, space and its thresholds are continually re-examined, as boundaries are destabilized through processes of narration and image-making.
